Google to roll out new AdWords user type: Email-Only

February 11, 2010

According to the Google Agency newsletter, they are rolling out a new user type in AdWords: email-only.
Email-only users will be eligible to receive system alerts (billing, disapproved ads, etc.) but will not be able to log into accounts directly. To help streamline communications across multiple accounts, multiple email-only users can be added to an individual account, and the same email can be added to multiple accounts. You can invite email-only users in the Access section under your My Account tab in any individual client account.

Google Buzz for Gmail gets Google a chunk of the social media pie

February 9, 2010

I have always found it interesting that Google did not go after social media seriously, yet it’s clear that they have been thinking about it. A lot. Like with all big new things Google, Google Buzz, that was announced today, confirms that we just entered a new milestone – where social media and Google go hand in hand.

Google Buzz is built right into Gmail, so there’s nothing to set up — you’re automatically following the people you email and chat with the most. Seems kinda nice. And on top of that, sharing photos, videos, and links is also built-in – and no nothing small here: pics are big and high-res and videos play inline so you don’t need to open a new window.

Acquisio is now DoubleClick DART integrated

February 9, 2010

Acquisio released a few new features lately but really the DoubleClick DART integration is the biggest deal. The DoubleClick integration means that Acquisio can now be used to manage PPC campaigns that were managed and tracked by DART! The integration is not flawless but all URL encoding and data syncing are handled seamlessly.

In addition to the DoubleClick integration, you can now add KPI graphs to your client reports – this feature is only available in English for now, but according to Acquisio a multi-language version will follow shortly. Note: in order to take advantage of this, you must first have access to the KPI tracking module.

Last but not least, double-byte characters are now supported in PDF reports – which is a bigger deal for anybody using hieroglyphs and Acquisio.

AdWords newest feature: click-to-call for local mobile ads

February 8, 2010

If you are like me, you use your mobile phone a lot to find information online – whether you need a store location or a phone number. Now, with AdWords latest feature we’ll see click-to-call ads on our smart phones. And I totally agree with Google that the “ability for prospective customers to easily call a business is a key distinguishing feature of searches made on mobile phones versus computers”: I really like being able to click on the number instead of punching it in.

Now, what do you do if you’d like to sign up for click-to-call ads? Here are two simple steps:

Tip on user-agent based cloaking and how to avoid (or postpone) SE detection

January 22, 2010

User-agent based cloaking is done by checking the user-agent of the visitor and serving different content to visitors based on their user-agent (i.e. if the user-agent is a search engine spider versus anybody else). It is a blackhat SEO technique, yet some websites still do it. Those of you who are doing it, keep in mind that there’s a good chance a competitor will report you if they notice you are doing this.

To see if your user-based cloaking gets detected at the moment, run your site (or a competitor’s site) through Cloaking Detector.

But if you have set your mind on taking this route regardless of its black tint, do so in a smart way. Here’s a tip: make sure that cloaked pages are not cached by SEs. This can be done via META elements. This is important because it ensures that the cloaked page for the SEs can not be seen by users who click on the “cache” link for that page in the SERPs.
